Overview
This is a pair of highly tactile, slip-cast or press-molded studio pottery lidded boxes designed to realistically mimic sea urchin tests. While the exteriors are left unglazed and raw to emphasize the natural, bumpy texture of the marine skeleton, the interiors surprise the viewer with vibrant, pooling crystalline glazes in shades of electric blue and lavender.
Story
A coastal studio in the late 20th century served as the birthplace for these clever vessels. By hiding a brilliant, glassy tide pool of color inside a rough, chalky exterior, the artist recreated the exact magic of discovering a hidden marine world inside a washed-up shell.
Maker / Origin
The pieces are incised on the underside with the signature 'Ilyn'. This points to an independent studio potter active in the late 20th century, likely working in a coastal American art community where marine life heavily influenced local craft production.
Condition & Value
The boxes appear to be in very good vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations to the delicate exterior nodules. The unglazed white clay shows minor shelf dust and light handling marks consistent with age, which is typical for raw ceramic bodies. Excellent condition like this preserves the tactile value.
