Story

During the peaceful Edo period, Japanese artisans at Arita captured the imagination of the elite with mythical beasts. This plate features the Kirin, a gentle creature of good omen that walked without crushing a single blade of grass. It served as a talisman of peace and prosperity for its owner.

Maker / Origin

While individual potters from this era remain anonymous, this plate represents the pinnacle of the Arita workshops, specifically aligning with the refined 'Ai-Kaki' (blue Kakiemon) style. These kilns perfected the use of native Izumiyama clay and local cobalt to produce a brilliant white body contrasted with deep, painterly underglaze blue.

Condition & Value

The plate appears to be in excellent antique condition with vibrant cobalt tones and a well-preserved glaze. There are minor firing irregularities and typical wear to the unglazed foot rim consistent with age; any hairline cracks or professional restoration would adjust the value downward.
