Overview
This is a grand, large-format porcelain charger decorated in the classic Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and delicate gilt highlights. It features a dynamic, segmented design radiating from a central floral medallion, showcasing stylized garden scenes, birds, and traditional floral motifs.
Story
During the 17th century, civil unrest in China allowed Japanese potters in Arita to dominate the European market with their colorful 'Imari' wares. Once Chinese kilns recovered, they began producing their own 'Chinese Imari' to win back global trade.
Maker / Origin
While individual potters in Jingdezhen remained anonymous, they worked in highly specialized workshop systems where one vessel might pass through dozens of hands. These artisans were masters of adaptation, quickly shifting their decorative styles to match the changing tastes of wealthy merchants in Europe and the Americas.
Condition & Value
The front shows good color preservation, though there appears to be some typical light wear to the overglaze red enamel and gilt highlights. The rim should be carefully inspected for hairline cracks or professional restoration, which are common in large chargers and can reduce value by 30-50%.
