Story
Nakabayashi Chikkei was born in Kyoto in 1816 as the son of Nakabayashi Chikuto, a master of the Nanga literati style. Chikkei developed an elegant, detailed style that synthesized Chinese-style literati landscape with exquisite flower-and-bird painting. This chrysanthemums scene carries the classic poetic theme of autumn longevity.
Maker / Origin
Nakabayashi Chikkei (1816–1867) was an influential Edo-period Nanga (literati) painter based in Kyoto. Trained by his celebrated father Chikuto, he broke away slightly by integrating brighter mineral pigments and delicate naturalism into traditional scholar-painter compositions. His works are held in several major museum collections across Japan.
