Woven in the misty Vosges mountains of France, this métis sheet was made to outlive its original owners. The stamped initials along the hem served as laundry markers when household linens were sent out to communal washhouses.
Maker / Origin
Gérardmer earned worldwide acclaim starting in the 19th century as France's premier weaving center for fine household linens (toile de Gérardmer). Mills in this region used the pure, soft mountain waters of the Vosges to wash and bleach their woven textiles, creating an exceptionally pure white cloth prized throughout Europe.
