Overview
This is a German Jugendstil cast metal vase stand or centerpiece element featuring organic whiplash lines and stylized pierced flora. Affixed to the central shaft is a contemporary engraved presentation plaque commemorating a 25th wedding anniversary (Silberne Hochzeit) spanning 1879 to 1904.
Story
In 1904, friends in Köln-Deutz presented this Jugendstil stand to celebrate 25 years of marriage. What looks like a vase base was likely designed to cradle a vibrant art glass or ceramic liner.
Maker / Origin
While no prominent foundry stamp is visible under the plate wear, Germany's Rhineland and Württemberg regions were powerhouses of Art Nouveau metalware, spearheaded by firms like WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) and Orivit. These makers revolutionized decorative arts by producing affordable, highly stylized cast pewter (Britannia metal) and silverplate for middle-class homes.
Condition & Value
Significant surface tarnishing, silverplate loss exposing base metal, and scratching on the underside. Crucially, the original glass or porcelain insert is missing. The missing element reduces value by approximately 50-60%.
