Story
Southern pine needle basketry is one of the oldest fiber arts in North America, originally perfected by Native American tribes. Judy Mallow, a fifth-generation weaver, transformed this ancient survival craft into a celebrated contemporary art form, using needles harvested directly from North Carolina's native longleaf pines.
Maker / Origin
Judy Mofield Mallow is a legendary figure in American heritage crafts, descending from a long line of North Carolina basket makers dating back to the 1800s. Known for her mastery of the 'Village of Yesteryear' at the N.C. State Fair, she authored definitive books on the subject and dedicated her life to preserving and teaching this painstaking Southern Appalachian tradition.
Condition & Value
The basket appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible broken needles, loose stitches, or fading. The natural oils in the pine needles have aged to a warm, golden-amber patina. Keeping the basket dry and out of direct sunlight will preserve this excellent condition.
