Overview
This is a beautiful, turn-of-the-century pocket watch featuring a 15-jewel Elgin movement housed in a gold-filled Keystone 'J. Boss' case. What makes it incredibly special is the custom retailer dial bearing the name of 'Louis Weule Co. San Francisco,' a legendary West Coast maritime outfitter and instrument maker.
Story
In 1911, San Francisco was rising from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake. This watch was retailed by Louis Weule, a famous maker of marine chronometers, linking this pocket watch directly to California's bustling maritime history.
Maker / Origin
The Elgin National Watch Company was the powerhouse of American industrial watchmaking, producing millions of high-quality timepieces. However, the true star here is Louis Weule, a German immigrant who established a highly respected nautical instrument shop on California Street in San Francisco, supplying ship captains and navigators with precision tools.
Condition & Value
The dial appears remarkably clean with no visible hairline cracks. The movement shows light oxidation but is visually intact; the inside of the case back shows some heavy tarnish/patina that should be carefully evaluated. Excellent cosmetic condition overall, but functional running condition is unverified.
