Overview
An elegant Japanese blue and white porcelain vase featuring a dynamic, hand-painted four-clawed dragon chasing the flaming pearl amidst stylized clouds. The base bears a distinct underglaze blue square seal mark reading 'Zoshuntei Sanpei Sei', a highly regarded workshop active in the Saga prefecture.
Story
Created in the historic kilns of Arita, this vase represents Japan's brilliant adaptation of classical Chinese imperial motifs. The mark on the bottom connects it to the famous Zoshuntei workshop, which gained international fame at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition.
Maker / Origin
The mark 'Zoshuntei Sanpei Sei' (Made by Zoshuntei Sanpei) is associated with the Tashiro family, prominent porcelain merchants and kiln coordinators in Arita. Under the leadership of Tashiro Monzaemon, the workshop became famous for producing high-quality export wares that blended traditional Japanese craftsmanship with Western-appealing scale and drama.
Condition & Value
The vase appears to be in very good condition with no visible cracks, chips, or major restorations. There are minor firing flaws and iron spots in the glaze, which are typical of late 19th-century kiln production and do not detract from its value. Excellent condition commands a premium.
