Overview
This is an expressive Shiwan glazed stoneware figure depicting a young Chinese maiden in traditional dress seated on a bench, titled 'Waiting to Marry' (待嫁女儿心). It exemplifies the renowned Foshan ceramic sculptural tradition with matte unglazed skin tones juxtaposed against rich, polychrome glossy glazes.
Story
Shiwan potters in southern China have spent over 700 years perfecting human expression in clay. This piece captures a bride-to-be sewing her dowry, frozen in a poignant moment of quiet contemplation before her wedding day.
Maker / Origin
The piece bears an inscribed title and workshop mark on the bench end and a pressed seal mark on the top right corner. Shiwan pottery workshops in Guangdong became celebrated for producing realistic, emotionally resonant figurines of folk heroes, deities, and genre scenes, carrying on a craft legacy established in the Tang and Song dynasties.
Condition & Value
The figurine displays good color and glaze preservation, but the raised right hand has damaged or broken finger tips / missing implement (as circled in red), along with minor kiln dust and base shelf wear. The hand damage reduces value by roughly 30–40%.
