Story
Patented in 1879 by Charles G. Hutchinson, this bottle top design held a spring-loaded wire stopper inside. Opening one required a firm punch downwards, releasing carbonation with a loud 'pop'—the origin of the term 'soda pop'.

Hutchinson bottles were manufactured by regional glassworks for local bottling companies and mineral spring resorts across America. Because these bottles were expensive to make, bottlers required customers to return them, making survival rates today a matter of historical chance.
