Overview
An exquisite Chinese export chess set featuring intricately hand-carved bovine bone pieces, where each major piece stands on a nested 'puzzle ball' pedestal. The set is beautifully preserved in its original silk-lined, folding wooden presentation box which doubles as the chessboard.
Story
Canton artisans began crafting these mind-bending nested spheres in the 19th century to dazzle Western traders. Each piece represents historical figures, turning a simple game of chess into an epic, playable dynastic battle.
Maker / Origin
While the individual carvers of Canton (Guangzhou) workshops rarely signed their work, they belonged to a highly respected, multi-generational guild system. These master carvers spent decades perfecting the steady hand and spatial awareness required to carve free-moving concentric spheres from a single solid block.
Condition & Value
The set appears to be in excellent, highly complete condition with all pieces secured in their original satin-lined slots. There are no obvious broken limbs or missing flags on the pieces, which is rare for such delicate carvings. The original folding box shows minor exterior wear, but the interior silk remains vibrant.
