Overview
This is a fine Japanese porcelain dish measuring 23.6 cm in diameter, featuring delicate iron-red and green enamel scrolling foliage along the undulating underside rim. The clean, unadorned recessed base displays a classic unglazed foot rim typical of Hizen kiln production.
Story
Turned over in the late 19th century, this Arita dish shows that Japanese porcelain masters decorated even the underside to delight diners as they lifted each course.
Maker / Origin
Produced in the historic Hizen province (modern-day Saga Prefecture), home to the famous kilns of Arita, these workshops perfected overglaze enamel techniques that became internationally renowned starting in the 17th century.
Condition & Value
The underside shows minor firing specks/pinholes and slight wear along the unglazed foot ring, consistent with age, but no apparent cracks or heavy damage visible in these views. Excellent preservation helps maintain value.
