Overview
An exquisite mid-century earthenware covered sugar bowl featuring a rich, deep burgundy ribbed body topped with a highly sculptural lid of green strawberry leaves and a delicate white blossom. This piece showcases the organic, hand-painted charm that defined California's post-war ceramic boom.
Story
In 1950s California, Gladding, McBean & Co. captured the nation's imagination by bringing the lushness of the Golden State's orchards directly to the dining table. This 'Strawberry Fair' pattern turned everyday breakfastware into a sculptural garden.
Maker / Origin
Originally a manufacturer of sewer pipes and architectural terra cotta, Gladding, McBean & Co. launched their 'Franciscan' dinnerware line in 1934 during the Great Depression. It quickly became a household name, beloved for its hand-painted, embossed patterns like 'Desert Rose' and 'Apple' which graced tables across America, including the White House.
Condition & Value
Based on the photo, the sugar bowl appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips to the delicate flower petals or leaf tips, and the glaze retains a high gloss. Any hidden chips on the inner rim or underside of the lid would reduce the value by 30-40%.
