Overview
This is a authentic Zhangzhou ware dish (historically known in Japan as Gosu-ware) decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a pair of stylized phoenixes (Fenghuang) among flora. Produced in coastal Fujian for export, these sturdy, energetic pieces were highly revered in Japan, particularly by tea masters.
Story
During the late Ming Dynasty, coastal Fujian kilns bypassed imperial monopolies to supply eager traders across Maritime Asia. Japanese collectors prized these free-spirited 'Swatow' wares so much they created custom wood boxes to preserve them for centuries.
Maker / Origin
Rather than single master artisans, Zhangzhou ware was crafted in regional folk kilns in Fujian. Free from strict imperial court regulations, local potters developed a bold, calligraphic painting style that emphasized spontaneous brushwork and expressive vitality.
Condition & Value
Appears remarkably intact based on visual inspection, with crisp underglaze cobalt pigment. Minor surface wear and glaze imperfections are typical of folk export kilns and do not detract significantly from value.
