Overview

This is a beautifully cut lead crystal decanter featuring a distinctive pointed, conical base designed to rest in a custom metal cradle. Known colloquially as a 'spinning top' or 'rocking' decanter, it features the iconic Lismore pattern with its signature diamond and wedge cuts.

Story

Designed originally for use on rolling ships, these pointed-bottom decanters could not tip over because they had no flat base. Instead, they swayed gracefully with the motion of the sea or rested securely in a custom-fitted gimbal stand.

Maker / Origin

Established in 1783 in the Irish harbor town of Waterford, the company became world-renowned for producing crystal of unparalleled clarity and brilliance. Though the original factory closed in the 1850s, the brand was spectacularly revived in 1947, quickly reclaiming its status as the gold standard of luxury glassware.

Condition & Value

The crystal appears bright and clear with no major clouding. The pointed tip of the decanter base must be inspected closely for micro-fleabites or chips from resting on hard surfaces. The metal stand shows some light oxidation and wear to the protective rubber/plastic sleeves.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
