Overview
A rare survivor from the golden age of the American folk music revival, this March 1974 issue of Mugwumps served as the primary classifieds and research hub for vintage instrument collectors. It features detailed illustrations of pre-war Gibson Mastertone banjos, which are among the most coveted musical instruments in the world today.
Story
Before the internet, this tiny magazine was the secret handshake of the folk world. It connected isolated collectors and preserved the history of makers like Gibson and Martin when the rest of the world had forgotten them.
Maker / Origin
Founded by Michael I. Holmes, Mugwumps was a labor of love that became the 'bible' for acoustic instrument identification. Holmes was a pioneer in documenting serial numbers and factory specifications that modern luthiers still rely on today.
Condition & Value
The cover shows visible foxing (brown spotting) and some surface soiling consistent with age. There is a slight vertical crease near the center, but the graphics remain clear and the binding appears intact. Condition issues reduce the value by approximately 25% compared to a mint copy.
