Overview

A vibrant, hand-stretched decorative glass bowl in the form of a swan, featuring a 'slag' or 'end-of-day' swirl pattern of cerulean blue and golden amber.

Story

By the mid-1960s, the art of hand-stretched glass had moved from the exclusive furnaces of Venice into the heart of the American home. These swans were a staple of the 'Modern' sideboard, designed to catch the light and provide a splash of color in an era of…

Maker / Origin

While often unsigned, these pieces were the work of skilled 'gaffers' who had only seconds to shape the molten glass before it hardened.

Condition & Value

The glass appears to have excellent clarity with no visible 'sickness' or clouding. The beak and tail feathers, which are the most prone to chipping, appear intact in the photo. Minor shelf wear on the base is consistent with age and does not detract from the value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
