Overview

An exquisite Japanese black lacquer circular cosmetic box (maru-futamono) decorated with fine gold maki-e depicting autumn grasses (akikusa) such as chrysanthemums and bush clover. Designed historically as a protective vanity case to hold a bronze mirror and cosmetic tools, it features delicate sprigging techniques over deep urushi lacquer.

Story

During Japan's Edo period, affluent women used elaborate lacquer vanity sets for daily grooming rituals. The autumn grass motif symbolized quiet beauty, poetic seasonal appreciation, and fleeting transient grace. Holding a bronze mirror inside, boxes like this were prized personal treasures within a bride's wedding dowry.

Maker / Origin

Edo-period lacquer master artisans worked through specialized ateliers, applying dozens of micro-thin layers of urushi tree sap. Artists used bamboo tubes to sprinkle fine gold and silver powders onto wet lacquer before meticulous polishing.

Condition & Value

Appears remarkably well-preserved with high gloss on the lacquer exterior. Minor rim wear or fine surface scratches consistent with age. Superior condition significantly elevates value for Japanese lacquer.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
