Overview

A set of four vintage double-sided pulpboard beer coasters featuring the iconic Heineken green-and-black logo. These coasters bear the name of Van Munching & Co., the legendary importer that single-handedly introduced Heineken to the American palate after Prohibition.

Story

Leo van Munching arrived in New York in 1933 with a single shipment of Heineken just as Prohibition ended. He built an empire, making these coasters a physical piece of the marketing campaign that taught Americans to love imported green-bottle lager.

Maker / Origin

While printed in Holland, these coasters were distributed by Van Munching & Co. of New York, the exclusive U.S. importer of Heineken from 1933 until 1993. Leo van Munching's brilliant marketing transformed a regional Dutch beer into America's number-one imported lager for decades.

Condition & Value

The coasters show light toning, minor edge wear, and some faint staining/spotting consistent with age, particularly on the top-left coaster. They appear to be structurally sound with no major tears or heavy water warping, which preserves their display value. Vintage beer coasters (tegestology) are highly collectible but common.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
