Overview
This is a mid-century Italian ceramic pipe ashtray featuring a central cork knocker and hand-painted coastal scenes on its square sides. Designed specifically for pipe smokers, the cork center allows the user to gently tap out ash without damaging their delicate briarwood pipes.
Story
During the mid-century pipe-smoking boom, Chicago-based Rico Industries imported these specialized ceramic pieces from Italy. The central cork was a clever, practical innovation designed to protect expensive briarwood pipes from cracking when emptied.
Maker / Origin
Rico Industries was founded in Chicago in 1944, initially starting as a manufacturer of small leather goods and novelty items. By the mid-20th century, they grew their business by importing beautifully crafted, hand-painted ceramic giftware and tobacciana from skilled workshops in Italy to sell to the booming American consumer market.
Condition & Value
The ceramic body shows minor edge wear and small glaze flecks/chips along the sharp green borders, which is very common for Italian earthenware of this age. The original cork knocker is present but shows typical darkening and wear from use. Overall, it remains in very good, functional vintage condition.
