Overview
An exceptionally large, 44cm porcelain charger decorated in the Nabeshima style with a dense, mesmerizing pattern of green seigaiha (ocean waves). Floating amidst the turbulent waters are finely detailed, golden-yellow kirin (mythical beasts), auspicious flaming jewels, and coral branches, all executed with remarkable precision.
Story
Created during Japan's golden age of export art, this charger uses a mythical beast to symbolize peace and prosperity. The design was originally reserved exclusively for the Shogun's court, representing the absolute peak of Japanese ceramic prestige.
Maker / Origin
While bearing an apocryphal Chinese Ming Dynasty mark to honor past ceramic mastery, this piece was crafted in the Arita region, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. The artisans here specialized in reviving the ultra-exclusive 'Nabeshima' style, which was historically produced under strict secrecy for the ruling Nabeshima clan.
Condition & Value
The charger appears to be in excellent condition with vibrant enamels and intact gilding. There is minor wear consistent with age on the base and foot ring, and some light surface dust. The accompanying wooden box has helped preserve its condition, which greatly supports its value.
