Overview
This is a heavy cast iron promotional figure of 'Nipper,' the famous terrier mix who became the iconic mascot for RCA Victor. Captured in his signature pose with a cocked head, he is listening intently to 'His Master's Voice' coming from a phonograph.
Story
In 1898, English painter Francis Barraud captured his late brother's dog, Nipper, listening to a phonograph. The Gramophone Company bought the painting, creating one of the most successful advertising campaigns in history.
Maker / Origin
While the original painting was purchased in London, the RCA Victor company in Camden, New Jersey, popularized Nipper in the United States. They commissioned various manufacturers to produce these heavy cast iron and papier-mâché figures for dealership displays and promotional giveaways throughout the 20th century.
Condition & Value
The figure shows moderate paint loss, surface dirt, and minor chipping consistent with age and outdoor or shop display. The original paint has a charming, naturally aged patina, which collectors often prefer over repainted examples.
