Overview
An ornate mid-century table lamp featuring three-dimensional sculpted porcelain cherubs playing instruments around a central column. The piece is finished with hand-painted gold-gilt accents and sits on a decorative pedestal base, embodying the theatrical flair of the Italian Neo-Baroque revival.
Story
During the post-WWII era, American households fell in love with romanticized European history. Italian workshops answered this demand by hand-crafting highly theatrical, gilded porcelain lamps that brought old-world palace luxury straight into mid-century suburban living rooms.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece is heavily inspired by the historic Capodimonte porcelain tradition of Naples, Italy. In the 20th century, numerous regional Italian workshops revived these classic 18th-century designs, specializing in expressive cherubs, floral encrustations, and rich gold-leaf detailing for the export market.
Condition & Value
The porcelain figures appear intact without obvious major fractures, though close inspection is needed to check for tiny chips on the cherubs' fingers, toes, and instruments. The pleated shade appears to be a later replacement and still retains a retail tag. The original wiring should be inspected for safety.
