Overview
This is a magnificent, large Japanese Kutani porcelain charger depicting the iconic Shinto wind god Fujin and thunder god Raijin. Set against a shimmering, textured gold-leaf background, the figures are rendered with dynamic movement, expressive faces, and rich, traditional overglaze enamels. The reverse features delicate hand-painted floral sprays and a red-enamel maker's mark.
Story
These two deities have guarded Japanese temples since the 17th century, when master artist Tawaraya Sotatsu first painted them on gold screens. This charger brings that legendary rivalry to life on porcelain, capturing the eternal dance of wind and storm.
Maker / Origin
The charger is signed on the reverse in red enamel with 'Kutani Toshitaka' (九谷 利隆). The Toshitaka workshop is known for producing high-quality decorative Kutani porcelain, specializing in reviving classical Rimpa school motifs and traditional folklore on modern ceramic canvases.
Condition & Value
The charger appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations. There is very minor, expected wear to the gold-leaf background and the foot rim. Excellent preservation of the delicate gold leaf and overglaze enamels supports the higher end of the value range.
