Overview
This is a classic mid-century silver-plated pedestal compote dish featuring a beaded rim and a weighted baluster stem. Produced by the historic American manufacturer Oneida, this elegant tabletop piece was designed to elevate fruits, bonbons, or floral arrangements at formal family gatherings.
Story
Oneida Ltd. began in the 19th century as a utopian religious community in upstate New York before transforming into a powerhouse of American manufacturing. This compote was crafted to bring affordable, high-society elegance to post-war suburban dining tables.
Maker / Origin
The Oneida Community was founded in 1848 as a perfectionist religious commune that practiced communal property and complex marriage. To support themselves, they turned to industrial manufacturing, eventually specializing in fine flatware and holloware.
Condition & Value
The compote shows heavy tarnish and significant green verdigris corrosion along the beaded rim. While much of the dark tarnish can be polished away, the green corrosion suggests the silver plating may have worn through to the copper-alloy base metal underneath.
