Overview
A striking mid-century sterling silver brooch featuring an elegant, stylized archer figure executed in a mixed-metal inlay technique. The teardrop-shaped silver canvas showcases the clean lines and pre-Columbian artistic influences that defined the mid-century Mexican silver renaissance.
Story
In the 1930s, Taxco became a global hub for avant-garde silver design. This brooch captures that magic, blending ancient indigenous warrior motifs with sleek, modern European abstraction.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1939 by the Castillo brothers (Don Antonio, Jorge, Justo, and Miguel) after training under William Spratling, Los Castillo became one of Taxco's most innovative workshops. They were world-renowned for pioneering complex mixed-metal techniques, including 'metales casados' (married metals) and 'mosaico de piedra' (stone mosaic).
Condition & Value
The front of the brooch shows light surface scratching and minor tarnish consistent with age, but the inlay remains intact and the silver retains a beautiful soft patina. Gentle professional polishing could enhance the contrast, but preserving the original patina is highly recommended as collectors prefer it.
