Overview
A magnificent Japanese porcelain ovoid display vase featuring a dynamic underglaze blue wave and cloud pattern. The central reserve showcases a powerful, hand-painted Shishi (mythical guardian lion) rendered in subtle, earthy tones that contrast beautifully with the vibrant cobalt background.
Story
In 1879, a group of visionary Arita potters united to form Koransha, aiming to bring Japan's ancient porcelain mastery to the global stage. This vase captures that ambition, depicting a sacred Shishi leaping through eternal waves, a symbol of protection and strength.
Maker / Origin
Founded by Eighth-generation Fukagawa Eizaemon and other prominent Arita artisans, Koransha (The Company of the Scented Orchid) revolutionized Japanese ceramics. They won gold medals at international world's fairs, blending traditional Japanese motifs with Western-influenced technical precision, eventually becoming purveyors to the Japanese Imperial Household.
Condition & Value
The vase appears to be in very good antique condition with no visible cracks, chips, or major glaze losses. There is minor wear on the unglazed foot rim consistent with age, and a few tiny kiln dust specks in the glaze which are typical of production from this era. Excellent preservation of the glaze luster.
