Overview

A rare set of five vintage double-sided cardboard beer coasters from the Rose & Crown Pub in EPCOT Center's United Kingdom Pavilion. One side features the pub's classic Tudor rose and crown logo with the Latin motto 'Otium Cum Dignitate', while the reverse sides feature vintage branding for classic British brews Bass Ale and Guinness, complete with the original 'Walt Disney Productions' copyright.

Story

EPCOT Center opened its gates on October 1, 1982, introducing a bold new concept of global community. These coasters sat on the dark wood tables of the Rose & Crown Pub during those very first years, surviving the condensation of thousands of pints of Bass and Guinness. They carry the rare 'Walt Disney Productions' copyright, which was retired shortly after in 1986.

Maker / Origin

Designed by Walt Disney Imagineering for the opening of EPCOT Center's World Showcase in 1982. The United Kingdom Pavilion was designed to represent a classic British high street, with the Rose & Crown serving as its anchor to provide an authentic, warm pub atmosphere complete with real imported British beers.

Condition & Value

The coasters show light wear consistent with age and gentle handling. One of the Bass-branded coasters has a noticeable white scratch/scuff mark on the reverse side. There is minor edge wear and light fading, but they remain structurally sound and free of major water staining, which is excellent for paper ephemera.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
