Overview

An authentic definitive postage stamp issued by the Kingdom of Hungary, featuring the mythical Turul bird soaring above the Holy Crown of Saint Stephen. Inscribed 'MAGYAR KIR. POSTA' with a denomination of 12 fillér, this issue served as standard postal currency during the twilight years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Story

Issued in the final decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this stamp features the Turul bird—the mythological falcon said to have guided the Magyar tribes into their homeland over a millennium ago.

Maker / Origin

Produced by the State Printing House in Budapest (Állami Nyomda) for the Royal Hungarian Post. The Turul definitive series, designed by prominent Hungarian graphic artists at the turn of the century, remains one of the longest-running and most iconic definitive issues in Central European postal history.

Condition & Value

Appears to be in good collectible condition with intact perforations, though off-center toward the bottom-left. Pristine, unmounted mint examples command slight premiums over hinged or used copies. The 12 fillér Turul stamp was produced in huge quantities for standard mail.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
