Overview
This is the iconic 'Doppel-Tüte' (Double Paper Bag) porcelain vase designed by Finnish modernist master Tapio Wirkkala for Rosenthal's avant-garde Studio-Linie. It brilliantly mimics the crinkled, utilitarian form of two joined paper grocery bags, complete with a serrated pinked rim, rendered in a soft, satin-glazed celadon-grey porcelain.
Story
In 1977, Finnish design legend Tapio Wirkkala turned a disposable paper grocery bag into a permanent luxury object. By casting the crinkled paper in fine German porcelain, he challenged how we define beauty and value.
Maker / Origin
Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was a giant of mid-century Scandinavian design, famous for his work in glass, wood, and porcelain. His collaboration with the German manufacturer Rosenthal began in the 1950s, pushing the historic porcelain company into the bold, experimental territory of the post-war studio movement.
Condition & Value
The photos show the vase in excellent vintage condition. The highly vulnerable serrated teeth along the top rim appear completely intact with no visible chips, and the satin glaze shows no obvious scuffs or staining. Excellent condition like this commands a premium for this specific design.
