The central medallion depicts a lush flowering peony surrounded by radiating paneled borders of auspicious motifs, executed in the Chinese Qing-style revival popular during the late Edo period.

In the 19th century, Edo-period potters in Arita looked back to coveted Chinese porcelain designs to create monumental serving dishes for elite banquets. This massive 44cm basin features the classic 'fuyode' (hibiscus/kraak) paneled layout.
