Overview

An impressive 44cm (over 17 inches) Japanese porcelain basin featuring vibrant cobalt blue underglaze decoration in the traditional kraak/fuyode style. The central medallion depicts a lush flowering peony surrounded by radiating paneled borders of auspicious motifs, executed in the Chinese Qing-style revival popular during the late Edo period.

Story

In the 19th century, Edo-period potters in Arita looked back to coveted Chinese porcelain designs to create monumental serving dishes for elite banquets. This massive 44cm basin features the classic 'fuyode' (hibiscus/kraak) paneled layout.

Maker / Origin

Crafted in the famed kilns of Arita (Hizen province), birthplace of Japanese porcelain. During the late Edo period, master potters specialized in large-scale tableware to meet the lavish dining demands of wealthy merchants and feudal lords.

Condition & Value

Appears in good vintage condition with bright glaze and strong cobalt color. Minor kiln specks and iron spots typical of Edo-period firing are visible on the reverse; check closely for any hairline rim cracks or professional restoration.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues

Best Venue

Specialty auction or a focused dealer with buyers already in this lane.
