Overview
An exquisite Japanese export porcelain bowl featuring a striking contrast between its exterior and interior. The outside is decorated in the luxurious Kinrande style with a rich iron-red ground, gold-painted scrolling vines, and reserve panels of white clematis, while the inside reveals a dynamic underglaze blue floral composition.
Story
During the late 17th century, European aristocrats went mad for Japanese porcelain. Arita potters created this dramatic contrast of fiery red-and-gold exteriors and cool blue-and-white interiors specifically to dazzle candlelit Western banquets.
Maker / Origin
Produced in the kiln communities of Arita, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, these wares were shipped from the port of Imari. The artisans worked under strict clan supervision, combining Chinese-influenced underglaze blue techniques with local overglaze enamel innovations to capture the global luxury market.
Condition & Value
The bowl appears to be in very good antique condition. There is minor, expected wear to the gold gilding along the rim and the exterior scrolling patterns, which is typical for its age. No major cracks or chips are visible in the photos.
