Story
In 1715, an Italian Jesuit missionary arrived in Beijing and forever changed Chinese imperial art. Giuseppe Castiglione blended European perspective with traditional Chinese ink painting, creating a style that captivated three successive Qing emperors.
Maker / Origin
Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), known by his Chinese name Lang Shining, was an Italian Jesuit brother who served as a court painter in China. His unique style combined Western chiaroscuro and linear perspective with Chinese materials and subjects. Because of his immense fame, his works have been widely copied, imitated, and paid tribute to by later generations of Chinese artists.
Condition & Value
The scroll appears to be in very good overall condition with minor toning and creasing consistent with age. The silk mounting is intact, and the colors remain relatively bright. Excellent preservation of the silk canvas commands a premium in the Asian art market.
