Overview
A pair of heavy, custom-tailored pinch-pleat drapery panels featuring traditional hand-embroidered wool crewelwork on a natural cotton or linen-blend ground. The design showcases a classic Tree of Life motif with winding vines, stylized blossoms, and foliage in rich shades of blue, green, and ochre.
Story
Hand-embroidered in Kashmir, these panels represent a centuries-old trade route of luxury. In the mid-20th century, bohemian-chic designers fell in love with this texture, turning ancient Indian embroidery into the ultimate statement of Western mid-century wealth.
Maker / Origin
While the specific drapery workshop is unidentified, the textile itself is the work of skilled cottage-industry artisans in the Kashmir valley of India. For generations, these craftsmen have used a specialized hook called an 'ari' to chain-stitch fine wool yarn onto hand-loomed backing, creating highly durable, sculptural masterpieces.
Condition & Value
The embroidery appears intact with vibrant colors. However, vintage wool crewel is highly susceptible to moth damage, dry rot, and sun-fading along the window-facing edges. The lining should be inspected for staining or deterioration, which is common but can be replaced.
