Overview

An oval porcelain serving platter decorated in the classic Rose Medallion palette, featuring alternating panels of courtly figures and floral-and-bird motifs. The center is anchored by a traditional gilded circle containing a pink peony and a bird. The underside features a red apocryphal Qianlong four-character mark alongside a modern safety warning stamp.

Story

During the late 20th century, workshops in Hong Kong and Macau revived 19th-century export porcelain styles to satisfy a global obsession with Chinoiserie. This piece features a red Qianlong reign mark, but the English safety warning reveals its true modern origin.

Maker / Origin

While bearing an apocryphal mark referencing the 18th-century Emperor Qianlong, this platter was decorated in a mid-to-late 20th-century workshop, likely in Hong Kong or Macau. These decorators imported white porcelain blanks (often from Jingdezhen) and hand-painted them using traditional overglaze enamels for Western department stores and gift shops.

Condition & Value

The platter appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or major wear to the gilded rim. The overglaze enamels are bright and intact. Excellent condition preserves its full decorative value. Value is driven primarily by its decorative appeal rather than antique rarity.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
