Overview
An elegant Japanese porcelain plate featuring a central underglaze blue painting of a mythical Kirin, surrounded by an embossed, low-relief cloud pattern. The reverse shows a clean, unadorned white glaze with visible spur marks from the kiln firing process, characteristic of historic Arita production.
Story
Crafted in the historic kilns of Arita, this plate features the Kirin, a mythical beast of good omen that only appears during times of peace and prosperity. Its dynamic, leaping pose is beautifully contrasted by the subtle, molded clouds swirling in the background.
Maker / Origin
While the specific workshop is anonymous, this plate belongs to the proud tradition of Arita-yaki (Imari) porcelain. During the Edo period, these potters perfected the use of local Izumiyama clay and cobalt underglazes, creating wares that captivated both domestic lords and European royalty.
Condition & Value
The plate appears to be in very good antique condition with no major cracks or visible chips. There are minor firing flaws, tiny iron spots, and kiln grit consistent with historic production methods. Excellent preservation of the rim glaze.
