In the late 19th century, Edward Hamilton revolutionized the printing industry from a small Wisconsin workshop. This heavy wooden tray once held the very metal or wood type used to stamp out daily newspapers, advertisements, and local flyers. It is a tangible survivor of the tactile, ink-stained era of physical communication.

Maker / Origin

Founded in 1880 by J.E. Hamilton, the Hamilton Manufacturing Company became the largest manufacturer of wood type and printer's furniture in the United States. Based in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, their reputation for indestructible, highly functional workshop furniture made them the gold standard for print shops worldwide.

Condition & Value

The tray shows wonderful, authentic workshop wear including ink staining, minor wood scuffs, and paint loss on the front green-painted edge. The cast-iron handle is intact and securely attached with no structural cracks in the wood. This honest wear enhances its industrial character and does not detract from its value.
