Overview
This is a vibrant Chinese cloisonné enamel covered ginger jar featuring a striking imperial yellow background decorated with a complex 'wan' symbol fretwork pattern. The jar is adorned with beautifully rendered floral motifs, including plum blossoms and chrysanthemums, framed by a classic ruyi cloud collar at the shoulder.
Story
Imperial yellow was historically reserved strictly for the Chinese Emperor's court. This jar's intricate background pattern is made of interlocking 'wan' symbols, an ancient motif representing 10,000 years of endless good fortune.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece was crafted in one of the specialized Chinese metalworking ateliers active during the late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period. These workshops employed highly skilled masters who specialized in the painstaking art of wire-laying and enamel firing, keeping a centuries-old imperial tradition alive for a growing global export market.
Condition & Value
The enamel appears remarkably intact with vibrant colors and no obvious major pitting, bruising, or large cracks. The interior and underside show the classic turquoise-blue counter-enamel used to prevent the copper body from warping during firing. Excellent condition for its age, which helps preserve its value.
