Overview

A striking trio of 'Prystal' Bakelite bangles featuring deep geometric faceting and inset clear rhinestones. These transparent phenolic resin bracelets were designed to catch and refract light, mimicking the brilliance of fine gemstones in a playful, modern medium.

Story

During the 1930s, these 'jewels of the masses' brought high-fashion glamour to the Depression era. Prystal was the luxury tier of plastic, marketed for its 'dichroic' ability to change color and glow when hit by light.

Maker / Origin

Prystal was a specialized trade name for transparent phenolic resin, often produced by the Catalin Corporation after they acquired Bakelite's patents in 1927. They revolutionized the industry by introducing a 'technicolor' palette of over 15 vibrant, gem-like hues.

Condition & Value

The bangles appear to be in good vintage condition with sharp faceting. A close inspection is needed to ensure no rhinestones are missing and that the inner rims are free of 'flea bite' chips. Minor surface scratches are consistent with age and do not significantly detract from value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
