Overview
An elegant Japanese porcelain dish decorated in the classic Nabeshima style, featuring vibrant overglaze enamel peonies and peaches growing from a dramatic underglaze blue rock formation. The exterior is adorned with traditional tied coin motifs (shippo-tsunagi) and a comb-tooth pattern (kushigade) around the high footrim, which are signature hallmarks of this prestigious ceramic lineage.
Story
Originally reserved exclusively as tribute gifts for the Shogun and imperial court, Nabeshima ware was produced in secret mountain kilns. This design combines the peony, symbol of royalty, with longevity-bestowing peaches.
Maker / Origin
While early Nabeshima was produced under the strict monopoly of the Nabeshima Clan in Okawachiyama, late 19th-century revival studios in Arita resurrected these elite designs for a broader, appreciative global market. Master decorators meticulously copied the classic imperial patterns, preserving the incredibly high standards of the feudal era.
Condition & Value
The dish appears to be in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or hairline fractures. The enamel colors remain vibrant with minimal wear to the overglaze decoration. Excellent preservation of the glaze and footrim strongly supports the higher end of the value range.
