Overview
This is a striking Japanese blue and white porcelain charger decorated with a dynamic 'Karashishi' (Chinese guardian lion) and a blooming peony. It comes housed in its original, hand-inscribed paperboard storage box, which identifies the design as a reproduction of an ancient Karatsu ware plate.
Story
Handwritten on the box is a promise of ancient magic: 'Ancient Style, Peony and Karashishi, Imitation Karatsu Ware Plate.' This mid-century piece was created to capture the rugged, spirited energy of Japan's historic 17th-century ceramic masterpieces.
Maker / Origin
While the specific workshop remains unidentified, the Fuku (good fortune) mark on the base is a traditional auspicious seal used by various kilns in the Saga Prefecture. This region, encompassing Arita and Karatsu, has been the beating heart of Japanese porcelain production since the early 1600s.
Condition & Value
The charger itself appears to be in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations. The original storage box shows expected wear, minor tearing, and aging to the paper, which is typical for its age and actually enhances its vintage character. Excellent condition of the ceramic piece preserves its value.
