Story
True black glass is actually an optical illusion created with intense concentrations of cobalt, iron, or manganese. Studio glass artists mastered these ultra-dense formulas to craft pure, sculptural orbs that act as liquid mirrors.
Maker / Origin
The piece bears an incised diamond-point signature on the base that appears to read something like 'Milchun', 'Melchior', or a similar studio artist name. During the Studio Glass Movement that took off after the 1960s, independent artisans across North America and Europe turned away from factory production to create signed, one-of-a-kind sculptural forms.
Condition & Value
The glass shows a brilliant gloss with no obvious chips or cracks visible on the dome; some typical shelf wear and an open pontil scar are present on the base. Good condition keeps it attractive to art glass collectors.
