Story
Edo-period Arita kilns produced massive chargers like this for display in wealthy merchant homes and samurai residences. Measuring over 45 centimeters across, firing a porcelain disk of this scale without sagging or cracking in the wood-burning kilns was a triumph of ceramic engineering.
Maker / Origin
Crafted by skilled artisans in the Arita porcelain district of Japan's Hizen province. Rather than individual signatures, these works represented collaborative workshop perfection, combining master throwing, cobalt underglaze painting, and delicate overglaze enameling.
Condition & Value
Visible hairline crack extending through the body from the upper rim down toward the center. Small rim chips and typical surface firing imperfections (pinholes/iron spots) are present. The crack reduces the value by approximately 50-60%.
