In 1943, Ansel Adams was commissioned by the U.S. Department of the Interior to capture the American wilderness to boost national morale during WWII. This rare Type I photograph was printed directly from his original negative within approximately two years of the shot.

Ansel Adams is perhaps the most famous landscape photographer in history, known for his dramatic black-and-white images of the American West and his co-development of the revolutionary 'Zone System' of photographic exposure. His work was instrumental in the conservation movement, helping to expand the National Park system by showing Congress the sublime beauty of these protected lands.
