Overview
An antique German bisque socket-head doll featuring the highly popular '390' mold, complete with a fully jointed composition body, glass sleep eyes, and an open mouth with tiny molded teeth. This classic example represents the golden age of German doll manufacturing, when Thuringian factories dominated the global toy market with their lifelike porcelain creations.
Story
In the early 1900s, German toy makers dominated the globe. Armand Marseille's factory in Thuringia produced thousands of bisque heads daily, using local clay to create the lifelike, translucent skin tones that enchanted children worldwide.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1885 by Russian-born Armand Marseille, the company became one of the largest and most prolific bisque doll head manufacturers in the world. Located in the Thuringia region of Germany, which was rich in clay deposits, Marseille supplied beautifully sculpted heads not only for his own dolls but also for other prominent doll makers of the era.
Condition & Value
The bisque head appears free of major cracks or chips from the exterior, though it should be inspected with a light from the inside. The jointed composition body shows typical age-related wear, including paint flaking, crazing, and loss of the surface gesso layer on the limbs and torso.
