Story

During Japan's isolated Edo period, Arita artisans perfected a double-firing technique that combined deep blue underglaze with vibrant red overglaze. The dense chrysanthemum pattern on this cup required hundreds of microscopic brushstrokes, creating a shimmering optical texture. Holding this cup connects you directly to the refined tea rituals of old Japan.

Maker / Origin

Rather than a single artisan, pieces like this emerged from specialized family kilns in the Arita region. Masters of 'Sometsuke' painted the blue underglaze before the high-temperature porcelain firing, after which master 'Aka-e-shi' enamelers added the delicate red details for a second, lower-temperature firing.

Condition & Value

Appears to be in very good antique condition with minor firing specks (iron spots) inside, typical for Edo-period porcelain kiln environments. Minor wear along the rim glaze, which is consistent with age and gentle use.
