Overview
This is a footed glass tumbler featuring a classic pressed geometric diamond and fan pattern. What makes it truly magical is its delicate lavender-violet hue, which is not an artificial dye but a chemical reaction to decades of natural sunlight.
Story
Before World War I, American glassmakers added manganese to neutralize the green tint of iron impurities in sand. Decades of exposure to ultraviolet sunlight triggered a chemical reaction, turning this once-clear glass a beautiful, permanent lavender.
Maker / Origin
During the late 19th century, hundreds of glass factories thrived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana, competing to create affordable, beautiful tableware for the growing American middle class. While the specific factory remains anonymous, this piece represents the peak of the Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG) movement.
Condition & Value
The glass appears bright and clear with no major visible chips or cracks. There is minor shelf wear on the bottom of the footed base, which is expected for its age. Excellent condition with strong purple coloration commands the higher end of the range.
