Overview

An exquisite porcelain charger decorated in the classic 'famille rose' (fencai) palette, featuring the traditional motif of nine peaches growing on gnarled branches alongside iron-red bats. The design masterfully flows over the rim onto the exterior of the dish, a highly difficult decorative technique known as 'over-the-wall' (guo qiang).

Story

Created as a visual riddle, this design pairs nine peaches with five bats to form a powerful blessing. In Chinese culture, this specific combination represents the ultimate wish for 'nine-fold longevity' and 'five-fold blessings'.

Maker / Origin

While bearing a six-character Yongzheng (1723–1735) reign mark on the base, this piece is a later tribute to that golden age of imperial porcelain. Jingdezhen workshops in the late Qing dynasty and Republic periods frequently recreated Yongzheng masterpieces, matching the delicate potting and soft enamel colors of the originals.

Condition & Value

The charger appears to be in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or hairline fractures. The enamel colors remain vibrant with minimal wear to the hand-painted surfaces. Excellent condition is critical for maintaining value in Chinese art.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
