While many of these desks were produced by famous Michigan manufacturers like the Globe-Wernicke Co. or Grand Rapids furniture makers, many regional workshops produced identical high-quality pieces. These makers utilized newly invented steam-powered machinery to precision-cut the interlocking wooden slats (tambours) that give the rolltop its signature smooth glide.
